Curriculum Overview

Please find both the Reception and Year 1 curriculum overviews and expectations. 


Our Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum offers a firm foundation to be built upon during the children's journey throughout Leyland Methodist Schools and beyond.


It is our intent that every child develops physically, verbally, emotionally, creatively, intellectually, and spiritually whilst embedding a positive attitude to school and learning. We set high expectations throughout all areas of school life, underpinned by our school ethos; love, serve, celebrate, together. We value each child individually, and we are passionate in supporting all children to achieve their full, unique potential. Our Reception classes follow the EYFS national curriculum, which has seven main areas of learning.


We implement all areas of learning by providing a safe, stimulating environment that allows children to discover, be challenged, consolidate, and achieve their very best whilst developing resilience and independence. Using a combination of whole class input, teacher led activities, independent learning opportunities and individual support, we strive to develop all the "Characteristics of Effective Learning" which are at the heart of the EYFS curriculum. We follow the children's interests and knowledge to inspire their learning, building on an understanding of themselves, the local community and beyond. Our learning environments are adapted to meet the different and developing needs of our children. Across all areas of the curriculum, we assess through making accurate observations; learning is embedded and consistent to ensure all children make the best possible progress within our setting.


The impact of our provision can be seen through the children's achievements and feedback received by our parents. It is a privilege to be part of such an important stage in our children’s development. We are committed to deliver the best possible outcomes for our children.

Early Learning Goals

The level of progress children should be expected to have attained by the end of the EYFS is defined by seventeen Early Learning Goals, which are spread across the seven Areas of Learning and Development. The EYFS ELGs go hand in hand with the EYFS outcomes that can guide parents and practitioners on the level of developmental progress that their child is making.


At Leyland Methodist Schools, we use the Early Learning Goals to underpin our expectations for learning. Please find below the skills each child is expected to achieve throughout their time in Reception:

Year 1

We follow the Lancashire Creative Curriculum and adapt it to suit the learning needs of our children. Here is our curriculum map for the coming academic year. Years 1 and 2 will follow a two year rolling programme for all foundation subjects and Science/STEM. All topics are planned for in a way that provides clear progression, challenge and further support where appropriate.
